The Gironde, this French department that runs along the Atlantic, is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, in the south-west of the country. A largest department in metropolitan France, it owes its name to its estuary (eponymous) rivers Garonne and Dordogne. It is made up of three historically distinct spaces: its Bordeaux prefecture, the agglomeration and its surroundings, the Landes de Gascogne, a vast 1.5-million-hectare natural region of France, and the Girondine Guyenne, formerly known as Bordelais or Petite-Guyenne. Historically, the department was marked by political changes: French revolution, coup d'état of Napoleon III, confrontations between supporters of the left and the right, including the Gaullists. The Gironde has a great natural wealth: the Atlantic coastline, the vineyards in Guyenne Gironde, the various agricultural productions near Bazas and finally the Landes which are now covered by many forests since the 19th century. Its biodiversity is therefore also important, with its famous Bird Island. Finally, on the history side, there are many monuments to visit: the Notre-Dame d'Uzeste collegiate church, Bazas cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and many castles (Roquetaillade, Malle, Cazeneuve, Budos, Fargues, Villandraut). And for a pleasant stay, Airotel campsites are at your disposal: comfort, accessibility to all budgets and flexibility, that's what they offer. And among other destinations that we recommend: the Dune of Pilat, Lège-Cap Ferret, Lacanau and Hourtin.

The famous dune of Pilat will transport you to another universe, that of the deserts! You will believe for a day, that you are in one of these famous Arab countries with enchanting landscapes. 110 meters high (a record in Europe), the Dune du Pilat is an exception in France, no other place comes close to it, which gives even more interest to the Arcachon basin which shelters it. To access it, try to climb the dune or use the staircase of 160 steps which is at your disposal. Its summit is an exceptional belvedere: it offers a panoramic view of the ocean, the pine forests of the Landes and the Bench d'Arguin. You will be dazzled by the richness of the colors, green, yellow, blue, white, and reassured by the scent of the ocean spray. If you want even more height, no need for a flying carpet: the paragliders will offer you a view from the sky.
Lege-Cap Ferret is a peninsula that is part of Cap Ferret, near the Dune of Pilat and the delta of Leyre. You can go for exceptional walks and admire the coastline from outside, for a bird's eye view of the Gironde. And of course, swimming, fishing, sunbathing and relaxing are also possible. You will probably appreciate the tasting of fresh oysters. Also take advantage of the Vélodyssée to discover the peninsula and the whole Bassin d'Arcachon, if you feel like it. Not to mention the pinnaces, these little boats made famous by the film Les petits mouchoirs.
Lacanau and Hourtin are exceptional seaside resorts: sandy beaches and protected coastline, for a natural holiday. Lacanau, besides its lake, is one of the stages of the surf world championship. Hourtin also has a lake and not the least: the largest natural freshwater lake in France. For the beach, you can enjoy the beautiful coastline, the splash park and the children's island, which will undoubtedly delight your family.
